We were inspired by the number of people setting up their own email servers, and the reasons for doing so. Recognizing that most people do not have the time or skills to self host, but still want the privacy and flexibility that self-hosted provides. Self hosting typically runs on virtual machines and can perform poorly. MainMail LLC runs on new enterprise class bare metal servers with SSD storage. Virtualization always comes at a cost to performance. So even if you have been self hosting your domain, you might want to offload that effort to us. Self hosting is also vulnerable to long down times. MainMail LLC operates highly available clusters so that we can quickly restore service if a server goes down for any reason. That's what we are here to do for you.
A few years ago a large wave of engineers and technologists decided to build their own personal email service, using recipes, docker, or even a script that set everything up. These would be deployed on Virtual Machines, not on bare metal. Over time, security patches, configuration updates, hosting problems, down time, became a real bother and a lot of people began looking for new solutions. We are that solution. Our RoundCube based webmail portal is always being improved, we developed a plugin to enhance site security by adding the Cloudflare turnstile humanity check. This is not annoying like a captcha with same security benefits. We will continue to develop improvements to MainMail's web mail experience.
